Durgabai Deshmukh College of Physiotherapy was started in the year 1999 by Durgabai Deshmukh Hospital and Research Centre, under Andhra Mahila Sabha with a batch of 50 students offering Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy, a four and half year course affiliated to NTR University of Health Sciences. Ever since the college has the distinction of excelling in academics, and within a short span of its inception the college acquired a reputation as being one of the best institutions in the State. From a modest begining the college has grown in size and stature.  It has also started Post Graduation programme in four specialities namely MPT Ortho, MPT Neuro, MPT Cardio and MPT Sports was started in 2004, with an intake of 4 students or each speciality. Now the strength of the college including UGs and PGs is 350, with 15 qualified teaching staff and 10   Non – teaching staff, and 25 part time lecturers teaching various subjects.

The College of Physiotherapy is committed to impart the highest levels of collegiate education. It aims at the development of each student and focuses on comprehensive and evidence based education.

Special emphasis is laid on inculcating ethical and moral values in the students and encourage them to become thorough professionals.

The college has good infrastructural facilities. It is located in its own building with 3 floors for teaching purposes. It has a well equipped library with the latest books on all medical subjects. It has the latest journals. The college also has access to E-MED facility.

The college has an outpatient department with established speciality departments with a patient turnover of 50 every day in addition to inpatients.

The college also has an attached Therapeutic Gymnasium and a Hydrotherapy Unit for the benefit of patient rehabilitation.

The college has adopted two Rehabilitation Centres within the city limits. Tutors and the Interns visit rehab centres everyday and provide physiotherapy treatment in these Rehab Units on regular basis.

The college has also started a girls hostel at R.K.Puram, in the building donated by Sri P.Rama Rao to Andhra Mahila Sabha in memory of Smt.Pendyala Anasuyamma in 2006. This is a two storied building in 500sq. yards plot. Here a physiotherapy centre is also established.

Recent Events: The members of staff of DDCOP donated few essential commodities in individual packs for families of flood affected people in a fishers man’s colony in a village Mehaboob nagar on 10 Oct ‘09. The Gait Lab, Suspensory Therapy Unit, Hydrotherapy unit and the Therapeutic Gym. were inaugurated by Smt. Rajalakshmi Sunkavally on 30 Oct ’09. Tariff for Gym. – Monthly Rs. 1,000/- Quarterly Rs. 2,500/- Half-yearly Rs.5,000/- Yearly Rs. 10,000/-. This facility can be utilized by all the members of AMS family at concessional rates. A picnic was organized for the DDCOP staff on 4 Nov ’09 to Mallelatheertham. DDCOP has organized Kartika Vanabhojanam on 8 Nov ’09 at Sanjeevayya Park, and members of AMS including President, AMS and Chairman, DDH & RC have participated in the programme.  MPT results were declared in the last week of Nov ’09. 11 students appeared and 10 students were successful in the examination.
