intraduction:

Durgabai Deshmukh vocational Training & Rehabilitation Centre for the Handicapped is a unit of Andhra Mahila Sabha working for differently abled persons since 1982. The centre runs Special Education centre , Vocational Training Centre and Spl.Teacher Training Centre. It provides services to a total of 350 persons with disabilities.

Under Special Education centre two Special schools are working namely Special School for Mentally Challenged & Special School for Hearing Handicapped Vocational Training centre is working in an integrated situation where both non disabled and disabled undergo training. Under Teacher Training centre two courses are offered namely D.Ed.Spl.Ed (MR) & D.Ed.Spl.Ed (DHH).

History:

The centre started in 1982, the international year of disabled to fulfill the dream of Dr.Durgabai Deshmukh . In the beginning Vocational Training Centre with 3 vocational trades was started. Later on Special Education Centre & Spl.Teacher Training Centre were added. The centre was abled to construct a pucca building worth of one crore and a school van was acquired in the year 2001 with financial aid from Japanese Embassy and M/s Maganti Foundation.

Programmes and Activities

research:

The centre is indirectly involved in the research works taken up by students from other universities like Padmavathi Mahila University, Tirupathi & Osmania University Hyderabad. They visit the organization for collection of data on various topics in the field of disability.

international leval activities:

  1.   Ms.Shalini & Mr. Kishore with Mental Retardation participated in International Special Olympic games held at Shanghai, China.

  2.   Mr.Sudendra Patil, Vocational trainee with Mental Retardation won gold medal at Special Olympic 2013 New Castle, Australia.

future plans:

To improve Vocational training programmes by introducing new Vocational trades which are suitable for present scenario.

To add some more special teacher training programmes in the field of special education.

physical:

A three storied building with barrier free environment is available for persons with disabilities.

The centre is equipped with labs for Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Psychology and Audiology to provide full time therapeutic services to persons with disabilities. To provide education through practical experience for children of Special school for Hearing Handicapped a science laboratory is established. A computer lab with 20 computers along with internet facility is available. Resource room with all special teaching aids is available in the centre.

resources:

The centre has a library with books on Special Education, Psychology, General Education, teaching Methods to Special children, Speech & Language, Behavior modification etc. All the staff members, students of Spl.teacher training centre avail the facility of library.

A special recreation room is available with T.V and cable connection for the recreation of children with special needs. Resources are available to give training to differently abled students in co-curricular activities like Vocal, Non-Vocal Music, Sports & games, drawing & painting, dance & dramas etc.

employment:

The differently abled students of the centre get placements in private & public sector. Since 1982, more than 1000 students got placements. Since 2007 the centre achieved 100% placements for students of Sp.teacher training programme. They are placed in special schools & in Rajiv Vidya Mission Project.

intership for students:

Students of B.Ed College of twin cities, students of other rehabilitation centres and students of NIFT done their internship.

voluntary work:

The centre runs “Home Bound Clinic” for parents of Mental Retardation who are unfortunate to get admissions in the centre due to lack of accommodation. The special teachers of the centre provide services after their regular work (i.e) from3.30 to 4.30 pm.

News & Events

Mr.Bharat Kumar of Special School for Mentally Challenged has been selected for Special Olympic World Summer games at Los Angles to be held from 24th July’2015 to 3rd August’2015. He will be participating in the events of Running of 100 mt, 200 mt & relay in Athletics division.

  • Services through specially trained and dedicated staff.

  • Works for all round development of persons with disabilities through multi disciplinary approach.

  • Mrs.Ratna Devi, Vocational Instructor received State Govt. award during the year.

  • Most of the staff members receives Annie Sulivan best teacher award from Deaf – Enabled foundation.

  • Every year one of the best students of Special school for Hearing Handicapped receives Hellen Keller’s best student award from Deaf Enabled Foundation.
